Undercovers Cop

This is a… possibly unwise thing to do, and a… foolish way to end things. But if you’ve kinda grown to resent cops, including – maybe even especially – the queer ones who serve in secret? I might feel like a good idea at the time. :)

I tried a little different art style for this Tale, inspired in part by the courtroom sketches you see on TV, because cameras aren’t allowed in court. I’ve always liked this approach to drawing: starting with a medium background and adding both light and dark, instead of just adding darker tones to white paper. It fits the morally gray tone of the story too.

It was an interesting challenge to draw. I don’t think I could’ve pulled it off if I’d tried it back when I began working on the Tales, several years ago. Especially if I look at my drawing skills from 15 years ago (when I started getting serious about making comics). Ironically, it’s the looseness of this approach that makes it more difficult. I’ve always been a very “fussy” detail-oriented artist, and being able to “scribble” like this takes some confidence that I (deservedly) didn’t have 10 years ago.

We have a saying where I life: If you don’t like the weather in West Michigan, just stick around for half an hour, because it’ll change. The same applies to JAQrabbit Tales and the art. The next Tale is also my illustration work, but it won’t look like this.
