Who Wears the Pants?

The young’uns might not be familiar with it, but there’s an old figure of speech about “who wears the pants” in a relationship. I’ll explain:

Once upon a time, a married couple had to consist of a man and a woman. True story! Furthermore, the roles each person played in the relationship were determined by which one was the man, and which was the woman. (For example, the man would make decisions for the woman.) And finally, there was a long period in which men were supposed to wear pants (like they still do), but women were supposed to wear skirts or dresses.

So connecting the dots: If someone was to wonder “who wears the pants” in a household, that was code for “which one is in charge”!

Now we all know that with gay male couples and lesbian couples, that’s totally up to them to figure out. But mixed-gender couples can do the same thing!
