Daddy

In recognition of Father’s Day yesterday. :)

One of the milestones in a queer man’s life is the realization that he’s old enough to qualify as a “daddy”. For most of us, it isn’t something we embrace quickly or easily, but it’s not so bad. It just means admitting that you aren’t a “boy” yourself anymore, and there’s nothing wrong with being a “daddy”.

But the cognitive dissonance when someone we think of as a “boy” turns out to be… not just a boy? That kinda hit me like a slap in the face. And the reasoning that went thru my head – if I’m a “daddy” to a daddy, then that would make me… – that was a shock.

Today I know people my age – someone I went to school with, a co-worker at a recent job – who are literally grandparents. I’m still having some trouble wrapping my head around that.
